The airport was built during the Second World War to serve as a stopover for flights from South America to Europe. Today it is an important hub for TAP Portugal and Cabo Verde Airlines.
It has a single terminal and offers flights to destinations in Europe, Africa and America. The main destinations are Lisbon, Boston, Fortaleza, Dakar and several cities in West Africa. There are also regular domestic flights to other islands of Cape Verde.
